Barn cat stories

A few words from people who have helped cats find their way to a barn home with us.

  • Barnaby on feed sacks in the barn

“A scruffy stray kept hanging around our feed shed, and we didn’t know what to do with him. It took a few months to find the right barn, but they never gave up on him. Now he’s on a farm that needed a mouser, earning his keep.”

  • Cleo, a calico, resting on a porch

“She showed up on our porch half-starved and scared of everything. She’s in a quiet barn now and looks like a different cat.”

  • One of the pair in the hay loft at their new barn

“Two feral kittens from near our property line. Hilltop placed them together at a horse stable, and each one has claimed its own spot in the hay loft.”

  • Smokey, a black-and-white cat, sitting on hay bales in a dairy barn

“A half-wild black-and-white tom spent every winter in our garage, and we could never get near him. Once we finally brought him in, we had him fixed, vaccinated and ear-tipped at a low-cost clinic, and Hilltop found him a dairy farm that had just lost its old mouser. A couple of months later the farmer sent us a picture of him on a hay bale, looking like he owned the place.”

  • Luna and her kittens curled up on hay in a horse barn

“A mother cat and her three half-grown kittens turned up under our porch after a storm. We already have indoor cats, so keeping them wasn’t an option. Hilltop placed all four together at a horse barn, which is what we’d hoped for.”

  • The little gray kitten on burlap sacks in a shed

“Our neighbor’s outdoor cat had a litter in our shed and then disappeared. Hilltop found the kittens homes on two different farms. The farmer who took the little gray one says it’s the best mouser he’s ever had.”

  • Marmalade, an orange tabby, peering down from the rafters

“We waited a while for the right match, and it was worth it. She’d been living rough for years and spent her whole first week hiding in the rafters. Once she figured out the routine, she settled in, and we haven’t seen a mouse in the grain room since.”

  • Shadow, a black-and-white cat, in the hay loft

“We wanted an independent adult, not a kitten that needed constant attention. Shadow claimed the hay loft his first night.”

  • Willow and Ash sitting together beside the barn

“After our old barn cat died, the mice moved in fast. Hilltop matched us with two semi-feral cats who’d always lived together. They stick close to each other and to the barn, and they’re doing the job.”
