What we do
Some cats just aren't cut out for life indoors. Feral cats, shy strays and independent outdoor cats can do well as working barn cats.
We place these cats with barns and farms in the Western Catskills. In return for a safe home they get:
- Shelter: a dry, protected barn or outbuilding
- Food and fresh water every day, from a caretaker who checks on them
- A job: keeping mice and rats away from feed, hay and equipment
The farm gets natural rodent control, and the cats get a place where they belong.
How it works
-
1
Request an application
Fill out the short request form below. It tells us about you and the cat or cats.
-
2
We send an application
If we're able to take your request, we'll email you a full application.
-
3
Donation for vet care
Once you have an application, we'll arrange a donation with you. The suggested donation is $250. It covers each cat's spay or neuter, vaccinations (rabies and FVRCP) and a basic vet check before placement.

Placement and settling in
The cat goes to its new barn and spends an acclimation period, usually about 4 weeks, confined in a safe space with food, water and a litter box, so it learns that this is home.
We don't take donations through this website. A donation is only arranged after we've sent you an application.
Request an application
This form is the first step. It's not the application itself. If we can take your request, we'll send you an application, and then we'll arrange the donation for vet care.
Please note: We receive more requests than we can take. Applications are limited, and we may not be able to respond to every request. If you don't hear from us, please try the Barn Cat Network group on Facebook.
