Settling-in guide

A new barn cat needs a few quiet weeks to learn that your barn is home. Here's how to help.

What to have ready

  • A large crate, or a closed tack room or stall
  • A hiding box
  • Straw or other bedding
  • A litter box and litter
  • Food and water bowls
  • Wet and dry food
  • A sheet to cover part of the crate

Weeks 1–4

  • Keep the cat confined the whole time.
  • Feed at the same time every day.
  • Talk to the cat calmly when you visit.
  • Keep the area quiet.
  • Clean the litter box regularly.

Release day

  • Open the door and let the cat come out in its own time.
  • Leave the crate or hiding box in place.
  • Keep the food in the same spot.

After that

  • Feed at the same place and time every day.
  • Give fresh water, with a heated bowl in winter.
  • Use straw, not hay, for bedding. It stays drier and warmer.
  • Keep up with vet care.

If you don't see them for a few days, keep putting food out; new barn cats often hide.
